'I' Negotiate

Practice your negotiation skills with a friend. Think of a situation in which you would need to negotiate and use the steps listed below.

Steps in a succesful negotiation:
  1. State your position using the ‘I’ statements.
  2. Listen to the other person’s position.
  3. Find out what the other person wants or needs.
  4. Restate the person’s position to be sure you understand it.
  5. Brainstorm win/win solutions.
  6. Agree on a solution.
  7. Get an adult to intervene when physical force is involved.

Important negotiation skills:
  • Listening
  • Careful observation of the other person
  • Use of positive body language
  • Good verbal communication
  • Being clear about your needs
