Role Play (30 mins)

Below are two possible incidents that could happen to you. You are going to role play one of these incidents in a group. In your role play you should use the attitudes and skills for communication given below.

Step 1:
Read story 1 or 2 as directed by the teacher.
Step 2:
Read the attitudes and skills for communication.
Step 3:
Prepare your role play, both a positive version and a negative version of communicating. Use the attitudes and skills to help you prepare the role play. The role-plays should not be longer than about two or three minutes each
Step 4:
Perform your role play if called on.

Story 1: Enoma and Isoken
Enoma and Isoken are married. They find that they have not enough money for their children to eat. They decide to visit Uyi an old friend and ask him for help. It turns out Uyi does not have anything to spare although he looks to live in a good house.
Role play this meeting in two different ways:
In the first Uyi is very rude and says he will not help.
In the second Uyi also says he cannot help but is sympathetic to Enoma and Isoken.

Story 2: Babi and Dola
Babi and Dola are good friends. The have just completed their matrix exam and the results are out. They both open their envelopes with their results, as it happens Babi has done very well and gotten top marks. However Dola has failed two major subjects and her parents will be very annoyed.
Play this role play in two different ways.
The first time the friends congratulate and commiserate with each other on their results.
The second time they end up having a fight about the results.

Skills for good communication
  • Listen without interrupting
  • Establish eye contact with the person.
  • Listen to the person without thinking of what you will say next.
  • Empathize with the person as he/she is speaking
  • Clarify what has been said to make sure you understand
  • Use ā€œIā€ statements
  • Offer possible non-verbal messages such as a smile or a touch.
