Sexually Transmitted Infections

Do you remember the last time you got sick? Maybe you had malaria, or yellow fever. Some illnesses are passed through the air, some through touch, some by things outside of us like mosquitoes. When our bodies have some sort of germ inside them, we say that we have an “infection.” Today, we’re going to talk about the different kinds of infection that can be passed from one person to another during sexual intercourse or other sexual activities: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

There are many different kinds of STIs, and anyone who is “sexually active” can potentially have one. Remember that there are different kinds of sexual behavior involved in being sexually active, and each kind has different risks. You cannot tell if someone has an STI by how they look, or talk, or dress. Someone can have an STI regardless of how much money they have or how old they are.

Today we’re going to talk about the different STIs, how you get them, how you can tell if you might have one, and how to protect yourself. There’s a lot of information, so hold on tight!
