Students learn to critque Nigerian tv commercials on their messages about sexuality

Activity guidelines
Introduction
Here follows a series of 4 common media images from Nigeria which have some messages about sexuality. Have the students mark the messages and decide whether they’re positive or negative and why.

Step 1:
Divide the class intro groups of 4 or 5 students.
Step 2:
Give each group one picture to discuss. Below you will find the questions to ask per commercial.

Commerical 1: Guinness, Udeme the great man,
a pilot who drinks guinness


Commerical 2: Genevieve magazine,
pregnant woman, HIV positive


Commerical 3: Bodyform sanitary pads


Commercial 4: Joy soap for Ladies


Questions to ask:
Discuss each commercial in turn using the following questions:
- what message does this commercial give about women
- what message does this commercial give about men
- what message does this commercial give about sexuality
- what other information does the commercial give
